ODU, JMU hold spots in coaches poll

The top seven teams remain unchanged in this week’s FCS Coaches poll. North Dakota State (No.1), Montana State (No.2), Old Dominion (No.4), Wofford (No.5), and Eastern Washington (No.7) went a combined 5-0 over the weekend, while Youngstown State (No.3) and James Madison (No.6) held their spots after being idle last weekend.

Georgia Southern moved up one spot to No.8 after defeating conference foe and then-No.25 Samford 35-16. Sam Houston State (No.9) and Lehigh (No.10) each moved up one spot to round out the Top 10. Read more

JMU among six teams in I-AA Top 25

The concept that CAA Football teams are lurking in the shadows seems a little strange. The CAA had become the FCS’ dominant conference, only to take a step backward on the national scene last year. But as CAA teams try to reaffirm lofty status among the best in the FCS, the conference is still home to the most ranked teams this season.

ODU, JMU move up in I-AA polls

James Madison and Old Dominion can each claim a #4 spot in the national I-AA football polls.

JMU (2-0) is fourth in The Sports Network poll, with ODU (2-0) at #6 nationally. ODU, meanwhile, is #4 in the weekly FCS Coaches Poll, with the Dukes a step back at #5.

North Dakota State (2-0) holds the top spot in both rankings.

ODU establishes computer lab for local LFCC students

Old Dominion University has established, in partnership with Lord Fairfax Community College, a joint computer lab at the Luray-Page County Center for area students.

The lab will provide residents of Page County and the Town of Luray assistance in pursuit of their educational goals. Video-streamed courses from ODU may also be available to students as an additional delivery mode.

Students from LFCC and ODU may use the computer lab to complete course assignments and projects. The lab was made possible with support and assistance from Del. Todd Gilbert, LFCC, and ODU Distance Learning.

ODU shoots past JMU, 80-71

Old Dominion made 13 of 25 three-point attempts and dominated the glass 47-29  to earn an 80-71 Colonial Athletic Association win over James Madison University at the Ted Constant Convocation Center in Norfolk, Va., on  Thursday night.

ODU won its fourth straight and for the eighth time in its last night games to improve to 15-9 overall and pull into a four-way tie atop the CAA at 10-2. JMU dropped its third straight to fall to 10-14 and 3-9 in the league.

Senior forward Chris Cooper grabbed a career-high and Ted Constant Center record 22 rebounds while adding 10 points for the double-double. Senior guard Kent Bazemore led six Monarchs in double figures with 19 points, adding five rebounds, two steals and an assist. Dimitri Batten made four three-pointers for 13 points and Donte Hill and Trian Iliadis added 11 points each while Nick Wright contributed 10 points. Read more

JMU women knock off ODU

Junior guard Tarik Hislop’s (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) driving shot off the glass dropped in the basket with 3.7 seconds left to lift James Madison to a 57-55 win at Old Dominion in Colonial Athletic Association women’s basketball Wednesday night at the Constant Convocation Center.

The Dukes rallied from 14 points down in the second half for the win, which improved JMU’s overall record to 16-5 and its CAA record to 7-3.  ODU dropped to 7-15 overall and 4-6 in league play. Read more
