South Africa's Kevin Anderson celebrates a point against U.S. player John Isner during their men's singles semi-final match on the eleventh day of the 2018 Wimbledon Championships at The All England Lawn Tennis Club in Wimbledon.

Kevin Anderson and John Isner were exhausted and, understandably, a bit cranky after playing a 6-hour, 36-minute men's singles semifinal match at Wimbledon on Friday.

In 2010, Isner famously won the longest tennis match of all time, beating France's Nicolas Mahut 70-68 in the final set in a contest that lasted 11 hours, 5 minutes, took three days to complete and featured 216 aces.

South African Anderson eventually overcame Isner to reach the Wimbledon final. He defeated Roger Federer 13-11 in the decider of their quarterfinal match Wednesday.

Later this afternoon, No. 2 seed Rafael Nadal will take on No. 12 Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon men's semi-final.

The final set lasted just five minutes short of three hours. I mean, just playing like that, in those sort of conditions.it's really tough on both of us.

"At the same time, I'm trying to use the experience and memories that I have of being in the final stages of Grand Slams, just take things very simple, day by day".

"If you ask majority, I'm sure they would have preferred to see a fifth-set tiebreaker, too".

"I'm a proponent of changing that rule". Both were on clay, in Madrid previous year and in Rome as recently as May and the top seed regained his composure in the second set converting two out of three opportunities to break serve and level the last-four contest at one set apiece.

Friday's showdown will be their 52nd meeting overall - the most for any pair of men and 14 more installments than Federer vs. Nadal - and first at the All England Club since 2011.

Anderson became the first South African male to reach the final since 1921 with a 7-6 (6), 6-7 (5), 6-7 (9), 6-4, 26-24 victory on Centre Court.

He stands at 0-5 with Nadal and 1-5 against Djokovic.

One of Anderson's best plays came in that lengthy final set. Not only is he advancing to the first Grand Slam semifinal of his career at Wimbledon, he and his wife, Highland Park native Madison McKinley, are expecting their first baby girl.

It was the kind of tennis that Wimbledon's Centre Court crowd would gladly have watched all night long.

However, Isner was then unable to convert a set point of his own in the tiebreak before 32-year-old Anderson wrapped it up thanks to a netted return.

While Anderson-Isner was mostly a serving duel with a few longer rallies thrown in, Djokovic and Nadal repeatedly slugged it out from the baseline, chasing each other around the court and coming up with spectacular winners from every corner.
