India's Supreme Court upholds death sentence in Delhi rape case

India's Supreme Court on Monday upheld death sentences for three men convicted for the gang rape and murder of a young woman in the capital New Delhi in 2012.

"There is no material to review our order", said three judges led by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, on the review petitions of Mukesh, 29, Pawan Gupta, 22 and Vinay Sharma, 23.

The fourth convict in the case also on a death row, Akshay Kumar Singh (31), did not file a review petition against the Supreme Court's judgment from 5 May, 2017, but his lawyer AP Singh said he would file the plea next week.

"There is no merit in the petitions", said Justice Ashok Bhushan, who read out the judgment.

The apex court in its 2017 verdict had upheld the capital punishment awarded to them by the Delhi High Court and the trial court in the case of gangrape and murder of a 23-year-old paramedic student on December 16, 2012 here.

Three then appealed to the Supreme Court to have the death sentences converted to life imprisonment.

According to India's official records on crime, 38,947 women were raped in 2016, which included over 2,000 girls below 12 years age.

The girl from the northern Jammu region died after being kidnapped, drugged and gang raped by several men for days at a Hindu temple.

Death sentence will be carried out in case of a refusal from the President. On July 9, 2018 SC will decide the fate of the four accused of death sentence in the Nirbhaya gang-rape case.
