Hamilton's team mate Valtteri Bottas led and might have won but for a second safety vehicle, after Renault's Carlos Sainz and Haas's Romain Grosjean collided, that kept the front four nose to tail and only fractions apart.

Vettel led virtually throughout to claim his first British GP success since 2009. Off the track, he's happy to be a passenger in one of his three chauffeured cars: a Mercedes-Maybach S 600, a Mercedes GL 63 and a Cadillac Escalade. Both cars end up in the wall.

"The safety auto spiced it up", said Vettel, wearing supporting tapes on his stiff neck.

The four-time champion seized the lead at the start and fought back after losing the initiative during two safety vehicle periods to register his second win at Silverstone and the 51st of his career. His team-mate Bottas, on older tyres, led the closing laps, but was unable to resist the challengers. Vettel and Hamilton are behind him. The Swedish driver seems to be OK, but he's out of the race. He has a six-second lead after 11 laps but Hamilton is into sixth and has got rid of the slower cars.

Lap 26 - After finally pitting, Hamilton is now sixth. The safety vehicle is out.

Raikkonen will start third on Sunday's grid after qualifying 0.054s off teammate Sebastian Vettel, but believes he could easily be two places higher and ahead of Lewis Hamilton after showing promising pace throughout qualifying.

That dropped the Mercedes man to the back of the pack and Raikkonen was handed a ten second time penalty, served at the first round of pit stops.

Raikkonen finally went past Verstappen and managed to make it stick, while Vettel was pushing Bottas hard for first place with Hamilton lurking behind in third ready to take advantage of any mistakes.

Although he finished hot on the heels of poleman Lewis Hamilton, Vettel struggled during the all-important 60-minute session, with bandaging added to support his neck. He's previously talked about the perils of being recognised at traffic lights, where admirers try to gain bragging rights by racing him....

Hamilton was sent spinning and reported that his vehicle was broken but has so far continued in the race.
