Putin-Trump summit to have limited impact on Russia-US ties

The meeting, which comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Moscow due in no small part to allegations of Russian meddling in the 2016 USA election, was announced on Wednesday by Trump's National Security Adviser John Bolton after holding talks with President Putin.

When he and Trump meet to talk about global issues, TV images the world over will covey the same message: two politicians negotiating on an equal footing. And he has called the FBI's investigation into potential Russian co-ordination with his campaign a "witch hunt" created to delegitimize his presidency.

Trump has previously suggested Russian Federation should be allowed to return to the Group of Seven - formerly Eight - economic powers. The administration has said a range of issues will be discussed when the two leaders meet in Helsinki.
