Ocasio-Cortez, 28, won a massive primary upset on Tuesday over 10-term incumbent New York Rep. Joe Crowley, a Democratic heavyweight in Congress who many commentators viewed as a possible future speaker of the House.
Democratic socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez claimed on Wednesday that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is running "black sites" at the border. "But after 20 years of the same representation, we have to ask: Who has NY been changing for?"
"The message that we sent the world tonight is that it's not okay to put donors before your community", she said to supporters at her victory rally in the Bronx.

They also share a birthday with former Pakistan Prime Minister and first female leader of a Muslim nation Benazir Bhutto. They began by announcing the baby would be called Neve Te Aroha Ardern Gayford - or Neve Gayford for short.
Mr Crowley, who had not faced a challenger from his own party in 14 years, had 42.5% in the majority ethnic minority district, which covers parts of the Bronx and Queens.
Pelosi said the party is "particularly excited that so many women are running across the country", noting that when she "came to Congress usually people had raised their families or done something else before they came". "The party is an old-time political machine like the 1920s", he said.
Ocasio-Cortez consistently hit Crowley for not accurately representing the district, saying in a campaign ad - without naming him - that it's "time we acknowledge that not all Democrats are the same".
"I think I was primarily compelled on moral grounds, because I could only imagine if 60 people were shot and killed in Ferguson or if 60 people were shot and killed in the West Virginia teacher strikes", Ocasio-Cortez said. During a televised debate with Ocasio-Cortez less than two weeks before the primary, Crowley argued that "simply abolishing the agency doesn't take it out of the hands of (Attorney General) Jeff Sessions or this president". She was Crowley's first opponent in 14 years. "If 60 people were shot in protest of the United States' negligence in FEMA and kind of keeping us on that island, I couldn't even imagine if there was silence on that", she added, referencing the slow federal response to devastation wrought to the island after Hurricane Maria hit previous year.
Joe Jackson, father of Michael Jackson, dead at 89
It's entirely possible that we never would've heard Michael and Janet Jackson without Joe's abusive, domineering parenting. The couple split a few times and lived apart for decades, but they reportedly never divorced.
During her appearance on MSNBC, she responded to a question by anchor Willie Geist about how the USA would pay for her progressive agenda-which includes Medicare for All, a universal jobs guarantee, and tuition-free university and trade school education for all Americans-by firmly reminding him that the federal government spent hundreds of billions of dollars just a few months ago when it passed the Republican Party's tax law.
But Ocasio-Cortez, who has been a community organizer, garnered some important endorsements and appeared to energize new voters in the district.
The truth is that while Democrats don't agree on everything, a result like Ocasio-Cortez's victory doesn't show weakness at all.
Ocasio-Cortez noted that her family is Puerto Rican, a United States territory "that is granted no rights or civic representation", she said. Together, they will Make America Weak Again!
