Italy once again refused to accept the ship with refugees

European Council meeting

GETTYThe European Council will meet next week to discuss the migrant policy plans

Seehofer, Germany's interior minister, wants the right to reject migrants who have already registered in another European Union state, but Merkel opposes any unilateral move by him that would reverse her 2015 open-door policy and undermine her authority.

In response, a Maltese government spokesperson told dpa news agency that "the operation was initially handled by the Rome rescue coordination centre, with the Libyan authority assuming responsibility of the [search-and-rescue] cases".

However, Italy revealed Malta had refused their request take in the Mission Lifeline ship, a government spokeswoman said on Friday. In 2017, Germany gave Lebanon 370 million euros to help with the refugees and in a statement released Wednesday, the European Union adopted a support package to Lebanon of 165 million euros ($191 million) to help cope with hosting refugees.

Sources said the leaders of Italy, Greece, Spain and Malta would also take part in the Sunday meeting, aimed at trying to prepare a deal on migration at the main summit next week. The ship's position Thursday night was not clear.

Italy's Infrastructure Minister Danilo Toninelli said the ship had broken the law by taking the migrants, even though the Libyan coastguard had already intervened to rescue them.

More than 36,000 US troops died in the three-year war, which ended in an armistice instead of a peace treaty. China too has said they do not serve the cause of peace on the Korean Peninsula.

Mr Salvini is making good on an election promise to go after rescue ships run by aid groups, which he has likened to taxi services that help the migrant smugglers.

Also on Thursday, the German charity Sea Eye which operates another Dutch-flagged ship, the Seefuchs, said in a statement it was ending its sea rescue mission after the Dutch government told them that it was no longer responsible for the vessel.

"We ask Europe to provide more men and resources to defend the Mediterranean", he said.

"It transpires that MV LIFELINE breached its obligations to abide by instructions given to them by the competent SAR authorities in this case, namely Libyan Y coastguard or Italian coastguard, whoever of these two was coordinating the case".

We will remind, recently Italy and Malta refused to accept the rescue vessel Aquarius of the organization SOS Méditerranée 629 with refugees on Board.

While the number of sea arrivals to Italy has dropped dramatically this year - more than 77 percent from last year - the new government has thrust immigration to the top of the EU's agenda ahead of a summit of leaders next week.

The sum will be a "real budget with annual revenues and spending", said French President Emmanuel Macron after talks with the German leader, adding that Paris and Berlin hoped to have it in place by 2021.

Europe has seen a huge influx of migrant arrivals since 2015, mostly from war-torn Syria and Iraq, and the influx of migrants has seen a rise in anti-immigration parties across the continent.

"They are in awful conditions, not only medical conditions but (also) psychological conditions, and they really need urgent medical care and psychological care", UNHCR spokesman Marco Rotunno told Reuters.

"We may be leper populists, but I take the lessons from those who open their own ports". While Europe's economy has picked up and there is no immediate sign of financial stress, many analysts say reforms are needed to protect the single currency.
