England starts with no big expectations

England had promised to launch their campaign with attacking football and they tore into Tunisia from the start of the Group G game, their red-shirted players buzzing into open spaces.

Kyle Walker was deemed to have obstructed Tunisia's Fakhreddine Ben Yousse inside the box and the referee pointed to the spot, allowing Ferjani Sassi to step up and equalise from 12 yards.

Harry Kane has fired England to a 2-1 win in their World Cup opener, scoring an injury time victor to sink Tunisia. In addition to athletic prowess and speed, England boast Tottenham Hotspur's Alli, whom Tunisia's coach - himself a former midfielder - said was "excellent".

World Cup over for Croatia striker
At 30-years-old, it remains a question as to whether or not Kalinic will ever don a national jersey again. Croatia are back in action against Argentina in Nizhny Novgorod on Thursday.

Harry Kane scored in the closing minutes to secure three points for England and a strong start to the team's quest for World Cup redemption. Gareth Southgate has slowly but surely built a team with a coherent plan and some semblance of identity - something the national side have been lacking for the last 10 years, if not longer. Despite the result, their sloppiness before will concern Southgate.

In four previous World Cup appearances, Tunisia have won only one game - against Mexico in 1978. When you have very tall players it is very hard to counter them. Tunisia stand in their way in their opening game of a tournament where the big boys have failed to impress.

It's only too fitting that Kane was the example to follow then.

"It wasn't as good as it was in the first half, lacked a little bit of energy".

The knock did not stop the Tunisia keeper producing heroics to keep out John Stones' header, but he could do nothing about the follow-up as Kane confidently tucked home. Harry Maguire was also on the receiving end of some heavy-handed Tunisian defending in the first half as another incident that went unpunished. More seriously, Maaloul would like his "Eagles of Carthage" to cut Alli off from his Spurs companion and England team captain, striker Harry Kane.
