The new California would retain Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Monterey and San Benito counties.
Partitioning California into three states would increase the size of the U.S. Senate from 100 to 104 members, and the state's 55 electoral points would be divided among the three, according to Ballotpedia. Critics said some of the more rural regions would suffer from extraordinary rates of poverty as individual states, while coastal communities flourished in new, smaller states where the lion's share of California tax revenue is generated.
Northern California would include 40 counties from Santa Cruz to the OR border, including the Bay Area, the Sacramento region and parts of the San Joaquin Valley.

The new California would have a per capita income of $53,000 and southern California around $45,000. Government law experts say a plan would probably require an act of Congress - and it's unlikely Republicans in Washington would welcome the idea of potentially adding more solidly blue states.
