President Donald Trump credited Otto Warmbier, the University of Virginia undergraduate who died after being imprisoned in North Korea, with the creation of Tuesday's historic nuclear summit.

"I really think that Otto is someone who did not die in vain".

The Trump administration is also dealing with a North Korea that has a much more sophisticated nuclear weapons program, with more powerful warheads and more accurate intercontinental ballistic missiles.

It explained that the meeting had 'great significance in overcoming decades of tensions and hostilities between the two countries and for the opening up of a new future'.

The strategic insights of game theory experts like Thomas Schelling that shaped deterrence remain relevant as Trump constantly piled the pressure on Kim through a range of threats, from the ones he acted on like tough sanctions and others like strikes on North Korean facilities that he didn't.

Trump said the negotiations he has initiated should help improve conditions in the isolated country, which successive US administrations have targeted for gross human rights violations.

While Washington has maintained that Pyongyang should achieve complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization (CVID) this was not included in the joint agreement between leaders at the summit.

The U.S. president said he raised the issue of human rights with Kim, and he believed the North Korean leader wanted to 'do the right thing.' He said the negotiations he has initiated should help improve conditions in the isolated country.

"It was brutal", the President said.

"We had a historic meeting and made a decision to leave the past behind", said Kim afteward.

By meeting with Kim in Singapore on Tuesday in front of thousands of journalists and photographers, Trump has already given the regime a carrot it long sought, and he threw in an additional concession by suspending US military exercises with South Korea.

"Without support from China, it's really hard for Washington and Pyongyang to press ahead on denuclearisation and the peace process", Cheng said.

"I'm very optimistic that we will have a successful outcome from our meetings tomorrow", he said.

As Trump attacks, Canada goes to Plan B: same as Plan A
President Donald Trump has ramped up his messaging about the G7 and Canada in recent days, accusing the other G7 countries of unfair trade practices.

The President was widely panned by the mainstream media over his harsh rhetoric, with pundits and liberal lawmakers calling Trump "crazy" and "bellicose" over his stark language. 2015 numbers went down slightly, to 75%, but it was still the most widely supported strategy, just above "impose tighter economic sanctions on North Korea", at 70% support.
