27 People Killed, Up to 50 Wounded in 4 Attacks in Afghanistan Amid Ceasefire

The militant group agreed to the truce two days after it was announced by President Ashraf Ghani.

In Ghazni province, at least six civilians were killed when a roadside bomb struck a minibus, while up to 10 Taliban fighters and three policemen were killed in clashes with security forces in a separate attack.

An explosion in southern Kandahar province a year ago, blamed by security forces on the Taliban, killed five UAE diplomats.

But the militant group warned that the suspension of fighting for the first three days of Eid-al-Fitr, the holiday that marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, did not extend to foreign forces, who would continue to be targeted.

In southern Kandahar province, the Taliban stormed a security checkpoint on Saturday night, killing five police, a spokesman for the provincial governor told Reuters.

"If different factions don't accept the ceasefire, then attacks will continue". Many leaders rejected the selection of Mullah Akhtar Mohammad Mansour as Omar's successor, and objected to the group's establishment of a political office in Qatar, a country that they accused of making secret deals with the US government. The Taliban's cease-fire is expected to run from June 15 to June 17.

A former high-ranking Taliban official said the temporary peace deal could be extended and efforts for direct peace talks could be made.

"We have been stopping fighting during the Eid days, but we would not announce it publicly due to security reasons", Mujahid said.

Afghan police killed in Taliban attack on base
Afghan President Ashraf Ghani on Thursday announced a weeklong cease-fire with the Taliban to coincide with the holiday. It is underpinned both by the heavy daily toll of the long war on ordinary Afghans and U.S.

However, no group from Taliban has taken responsibility for the assault, meaning that either they don't want to accept it, or it could be another terrorist group.

"The PML-N government had played a pivotal role in initiating steps for peace in Afghanistan, including hosting the first ever direct, face-to-face talks between the Afghan government and Afghan Taliban in Murree in July 2015".

The government announced the cease-fire last week.

The attack began at 9.50 am when a suicide bomber detonated explosives outside the Education Department office in Jalalabad.
