Salmonella outbreak linked to pre-cut melon sold at Walmart, Costco, Kroger

The CDC said Walmart and Kroger stores in the affected states had removed pre-cut melon linked to the outbreak from their shelves.

The products were packaged in clear, plastic clamshell containers and distributed in Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina and Ohio.

The Illinois Department of Public Health is recommending that no one eat pre-cut melon bought at a Walmart store in the state, due to an outbreak of salmonella.

A multistate salmonella outbreak has been linked to cut melons, and most of the illnesses have been reported in MI and Indiana.

Walmart stores in IL have removed the product linked to the outbreak from their shelves.

Officials say the IL salmonella cases linked to pre-cut melon affected people ages 23 to 87.

Of the 60 cases of reported salmonella infection, 31 have resulted in hospitalization. The agency did not specify a specific kind of melon, but said the outbreak is linked to melons bought already cut and packaged -alone or in fruit salad.

The CDC says this particular salmonella outbreak could mean more hospitalized people than usual.

The updated statement , sent by email, changed the location of the health alert to "countrywide" from Guangzhou . The new evacuations come after the USA sent a medical team to Guangzhou to screen American government workers.

Symptoms of a salmonella infection can appear within 12 to 72 hours of being exposed. The elderly, infants, and those with compromised immune systems are more likely to have a severe illness.

The investigation into the outbreak is expanding rapidly.

People are also asked to be careful when handling whole melons.

Salmonellosis is caused by the salmonella bacteria.
