Zverev said he spends up to four hours each day working on weights and fitness.

No. 2 seed Alexander Zverev finally reached the milestone of reaching a Grand Slam quarter-final, with a five-set win over ATP Next Gen's Karen Khachanov. But the German player also showed, once again, that he knows how to dig deep when it matters.

While Putintseva regularly lost her composure, Keys stayed calm throughout and the big-hitting American secured victory on her first match point with a powerful serve which clipped Putintseva's racket and flew into the crowd.

When the match ended on court Suzanne-Lenglen, Zverev sunk to his knees with arms outstretched.

Zverev hobbled off the court at the end of the second, but he did manage to resume the third - even in the knowledge he would require a five-set win to advance.

American 13th seed Madison Keys also reached her first Roland Garros quarter-final with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Romania's Mihaela Buzarnescu.Keys, the US Open runner-up to Stephens a year ago, will face Kazakhstan's Yulia Putintseva for a place in the semi-finals, after the world number 98 saw off Barbora Strycova 6-4, 6-3. The German called for a medical timeout when trailing 1-4 after the fifth game.

"First time I felt a pull was in the fourth game of the first set, when we had a few great points, a lot of physical points", Zverev, who had beaten Thiem on clay in the Madrid Masters final last month, told reporters.

"I think that's the matchup most of the fans in Germany and Austria were hoping for when they saw the draw", he said."He's an unbelievable player". The German also suffered 42 unforced errors, compared to Thiem's 20.

Zverev was coming off a trio of wins that went five sets and, while still just 21, could not will his body to another comeback. The Austrian began his tournament by defeating Ilya Ivashka of Belarus in straight sets 6-2 6-4 6-1.

We saw a magnificent fightback from Diego Schwartzman yesterday, with the Argentine fighting back from 1-6 2-6 down (and saving match points) to beat Kevin Anderson and move into the quarter-finals.

The second-set tiebreaker was scrappy, Zverev clinching it with an ace to level the match.

Sloane Stephens sprinted past Estonian Anett Kontaveit 6-2 6-0 to set up a potential semi-final meeting with Keys, whom she beat in last year's U.S. Open final. Cecchinato had never won a match at a Grand Slam event before this year's tournament at Roland Garros.

"At the end, I was nervous", Thiem admitted.

"When we get on the court, it's time to compete", Stephens said of facing her friend.

Stephens - who performs both Caroline Wozniacki or Daria Kasatkina on Tuesday - snapped an 0-for-Four skid in French Open fourth rounds.
