Variety reports that the studio is developing a standalone film for Jared Leto's Joker, who debuted as a supporting character in David Ayer's 2016 super villain team-up pic, Suicide Squad. It would be a spinoff to the previous movie and take place in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), which also plays home to "Man of Steel", "Batman vs. Superman", "Wonder Woman" and more.
As well as taking on the lead role, insiders also shared that the Oscar victor will act as an executive producer on the feature, which is now without a title.
Qualcomm Unveils Snapdragon 850, Explicitly Aimed at New PCs
Qualcomm has unveiled the Snapdragon 850 processor, which will power the next generation of always-connected Windows 10 devices. After achieving market leadership in the smartphone world, Qualcomm now wants to make laptops and 2-in-1 devices sexy again.
Despite this development, Kroll also seems to imply that the Todd Phillips' helmed Joker origin story with Joaquin Phoenix in the lead role and set in an Elseworld-type continuity apart from the DCU is still on the cards too.
It remains unknown whether the movie will be released before or after the Suicide Squad sequel, or whether it will tie in with the plot of the movie in any way whatsoever. One minute, Ben Affleck still wants to play the character in the DCEU, but reportedly won't be a part of The Batman, which he was initially going to write, direct, and star in. Even then, it's entirely possible the film could come before Suicide Squad 2 - which does have a writer and director - should the studio opt to push Leto's Joker to the front of its schedule. Leto will both star in and executive produce the movie, which has yet to be titled, branching off from his (surprisingly) limited role in "Suicide Squad".

A Suicide Squad sequel is also in the post, due to go into production in 2019, and that's aside from the now in-development The Batman from Matt Reeves, helmsman of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War for the Planet of the Apes. Warners is on track for their previously announced plan to launch Harley-centric Birds of Prey movie, with Leto's Joker movie set to follow.
