Apple just made Apple Watch a lot smarter for runners

Apple Watch gets Walkie-Talkie mode

Apple introduces watchOS 5, with more ways than ever to stay active and connected

While Apple had introduced music streaming features with watchOS 4, it has now brought Apple Podcasts support.

Confirm that and the Watch will continue tracking, adding in the data it started collecting when it first detected the workout.

With watchOS 5, Apple Watch owners will be able to challenge activity-sharing friends to a seven-day competition, where users compete to close rings. This will track and share the amount of activity done during the challenge among all participants; and will also allow them to taunt each other to promote more competition. The watch will now end the workout for you based on the same heart rate and movement data. Apple has also notably added Yoga and Hiking as the new workout types, making the total workout count of 14 types. Speaking of all these different types of exercises, Apple will let you monitor a bunch of new stats and indicators, including swim strokes, the pace and elevation of your hikes, and cadence during long running sessions.

Rolling mile pace is a brand new metric for the Apple Watch too and it'll be an option to show the pace for your previous mile as well as your average pace or current pace. Works over Wi-Fi or cellular connections, and you can send quick realtime audio from watch to watch. Apple Podcasts Users can now listen to their favorite podcasts on the go with Apple Podcasts on Apple Watch and stream any podcast in the catalog by using Siri.

Watch notifications, which were once simple alerts relayed from your iPhone, will become significantly more useful in watchOS 5, especially in third-party apps.

Apart from the fitness-centric features, watchOS 5 has the Walkie-Talkie feature that lets users communicate with other Apple Watch wearers simply by tapping of the wrist. The Siri watch face will show you predictive shortcuts, such as a workout and a playlist that you usually do at a specific time of day. Notifications on watchOS 5 are now more "actionable and interactive" on the Apple Watch. It'll also stop those awkward Siri requests that seem to raise your phone, watch, iPad and HomePod in one single, horrific instant. Apple is partnering with a handful of universities, including Duke, Johns Hopkins and Temple University, to roll out that integration this fall.
