China and Burkina Faso on Saturday announced the resumption of diplomatic ties in a joint communique signed by Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Burkina Faso's Foreign Minister Alpha Barry in Beijing.

Observers say growing frustration with Beijing has prompted the latest supportive gestures from the United States towards Taiwan as trade tensions between the world's two largest economies escalate and concerns mount over China's assertiveness in the region.

Taiwan Foreign Minister Joseph Wu, who tendered his resignation, said: "China grabbing our allies and giving us pressure in the diplomatic space will not shrink the distance across the [Taiwan] strait and will not let cross-strait relations walk on a peaceful, friendly path".

Wu expressed regret at Burkina's decision and added that Taiwan can not compete with China's financial resources.

He added that his country will also halt all bilateral cooperative projects, cut all assistance to Burkina Faso, and pull out its diplomatic staff and technical missions from the African country. It last did so in 1973, before resuming relations with Taipei in 1994.
