Surgeon General Jerome Adams saves the day when airline passenger suffers medical emergency

The flight was delayed for more than three hours and forced to return to the gate due to a "customer illness", the airline said in a statement.

On Wednesday Jerome Adams, the US surgeon general, tweeted that Delta staff on his flight to Jackson, Mississippi, asked if there was a doctor on board to assist in a medical emergency.

It wasn't clear what the emergency involved, but Adams said the patient is now doing well.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services told ABC News the flight crew asked for help when a passenger lost consciousness while the flight was waiting to take off, and Adams stepped in and was assisted by two nurses.

Adams tweeted a call went out asking for a doctor, and he was happy to assist.

Delta Air Lines has reached out to thank him for volunteering his services.

Adams was traveling to MS for public events Thursday.

Adams stated on his website, "I, Surgeon General of the United States Public Health Service, VADM Jerome Adams, am emphasizing the importance of the overdose-reversing drug naloxone".
