Developers Can Soon Choose Which Alexa Voice They Want To Use

The online retail giant said Wednesday that developers can now apply to test the voices, which were built to sound like U.S. English speakers. Developers may want to use the preview to give different voices to characters in games and stories, for example. Regardless of their quality, though, many users will likely appreciate the added diversity these voices could add to their favorite Alexa skills in the future.

A team of Chinese and USA researchers has discovered a new method of attacking smart assistants like Amazon Alexa and Google Home, which they have named "voice squatting".

Amazon is giving this choice to developers through their Polly text-to-speech service.

Now developers can already choose to use different voices by uploading their own audio files, but according to Amazon, the use of their Polly voice is better due to its being more natural-sounding. Just like with Siri and Google Assistant, Android smartphone users will be able to talk to Alexa using the Alexa app on their smartphones. You can even use an Amazon Polly voice for every utterance in your skill if you like. Chiefly, it's the text-to-speech service which helps create the scripts for Alexa skills. This new capability now includes eight different US English voices.
