A nationwide technical outage has shut down Woolworths registers forcing stores to close their doors

A nationwide technical glitch forced Woolworths to halt trading this afternoon, with shutters coming down on stores across Australia.

Shoppers began reporting on social media about 4.15pm that they'd been told an IT issue was affecting cash registers.

A security guard was also stationed at the closed doors to turn shoppers away.

SBS journalist Lydia Feng said she was shopping at a Woolworths in Balmain, in Sydney's inner west, when the registers went down.

Several media outlets have reported that the outage was Australia-wide, and affected all stores, though Woolworths are yet to make a comment.

"They've told everyone just to leave their food and leave the store".
