The action followed a week of threats of retaliation for a suspected chemical weapons attack on civilians in Douma, outside Damascus, where Syrian forces have always been battling rebels.

Russia's ambassador to the United States on Friday warned that there would be consequences for the USA -led military strikes on Syria, adding that it was not acceptable to insult Russia's president.
