At least seven inmates are dead and 17 other people are injured after hours-long rioting at a maximum-security prison in SC, according to the state's corrections department.

The maximum-security facility that houses about 1,500 inmates in Bishopville, about 55 miles from Columbia, is home to some of South Carolina's most violent, longest-serving offenders.

Seven inmates were killed and 17 injured following an incident at Lee Correctional Sunday night. The Lee County Fire department also said they assisted with a "mass casualty incident" at the prison.

Emergency services from several SC counties responded to the "mass casualty incident", Lee County Fire wrote in a tweet.

Corrections officials did not immediately say what led to the incident and why it took hours to stop the series of altercations. An inmate was killed during a fight in July 2017, another was stabbed to death in November, and a third was killed in February.
