Macron weighing his response to 'red line' violation by Syria

During his interview, Macron said Putin was an "accomplice" to Syria's alleged use of chemicals weapons.

'We have not declared war on the regime of Bashar al-Assad, ' Macron said in a television interview, a day after France joined the United States and Britain in launching strikes.

"They have not used chlorine themselves but they have methodically built the global community's inability to act through diplomatic channels to stop the use of chemical weapons", he said of Russian Federation.

While it is unusual for a French president to present himself as driving US policy in military matters in the Middle East, Macron and Trump have developed a friendly relationship over the past year.

Insisting that the strikes were legitimate, Macron hailed the operation targeting Syrian chemical weapons facilities as a military success. "We convinced him to remain", he said.

Le Drian said France, which has backed opponents of Assad throughout the civil war, would swiftly take new political initiatives to find a solution to the crisis. "I pray that he would keep our country at peace and not exaggerate or exacerbate the challenges that come up with North Korea, in Russian Federation or in Syria", Carter said.
