County pinwheel ceremony sheds light on child abuse

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time for Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson members to increase awareness, protect children and strengthen families.

Prosecutors said the couple, who were arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in 2013 on a 17-count indictment, had abused the three children over more than four years while the family lived at the Picatinny Arsenal installation in Morris County.

"Nearly four million cases of child maltreatment are reported each year in the United States; almost five children die each day from abuse", she said.

People in Clinton County are fighting back against child abuse.

Each April, organizations, agencies, and individuals throughout the U.S. raise awareness of resources whose goal is to reduce instances of child abuse and neglect. Events this month are set to bring light to child abuse in the community.

In 2008, Prevent Child Abuse America introduced the pinwheel as the new national symbol for child abuse prevention through Pinwheels for Prevention®.

The training summit held by the organization Alliance for Children encourages the community to address and end child maltreatment in Georgia.

Pinwheels symbolize childhood as it should be: safe, happy and healthy.

Sullivan noted that child abuse is a problem that doesn't always get the needed publicity.

"Sometimes it escapes the memory or the minds of people with the problem we have not only in our county but throughout the country", Sullivan said.
