The survey makes it clear and predicts that no party will gain majority in the state. A total of 224 constituencies in Karnataka will hold elections, whereas one seat is reserved for a Governor's nominee from the Anglo-Saxon community.

The incumbent Congress Party, which is in power in the state under the leadership of Siddaramaiya, is predicted to win anywhere between 90 to 101 seats in the state election.

But what really caused sleepless nights to the BJP top brass was the party's own internal survey, which gave the Congress a lead in more than 100 seats. The BJP, which wants to dismantle the Congress Party and throw it out of power will have to be content with anywhere between 78 to 86 seats.

Going by the India Today-Karvy Insights opinion poll, H D Deve Gowda's JD (S) will be the kingmaker in Karnataka.

In 2013, the same polling agency had predicted 118-120 seats for the Congress, but the party had ended up winning 122 seats. In the previous elections, while JD (S) was able to register around 20 percent vote share, their leaders claim that this alliance would further increase their vote bank in the upcoming elections. The increasing vote share for the BJP does not translate into a victory for the Saffron party.

The poll panel had set up an internal inquiry after BJP's social media chief Amit Malviya had tweeted the Assembly election schedule a little before the EC press conference. As many as 62 per cent of the interviews were in rural areas, the remaining in urban centres.

The perception that Siddaramaiah's performance has been very good or good is relatively weaker among the Vokkaligas, Lingayats and Brahmins.

Shah, who is in Karnataka for a two-day visit, started his day on Thursday by sitting on a protest outside the district commissioner office in Dharwad, about 450 kms from Bengaluru, against the "undemocratic and divisive politics" of the Congress party.
