Apple to assemble iPhone 6s Plus in Bengaluru soon

'Make in India': iPhone 6s production to begin in few weeks; will witness lower prices

Apple started trial production of iPhone 6s Plus in Bengaluru

A report this week by The Economic Times said that Apple could start manufacturing the iPhone 6S Plus in Bengaluru in two weeks.

"As per the executives, locally produced iPhone 6s Plus could bring down prices by 5-7%, which will make its price competitive to China's OnePlus smartphones and some premium models of Samsung". The company didn't officially lower the rate of the iPhone SE when it began putting together the handset in India, but online and offline discounts allow the phone to be sold for as low as Rs 18999 nowadays.

Apple shares are up 0.4% to $174.87.

But the source told IBTimes India, that the model, which the company is planning to roll out from the Bengaluru plant is the 4.7-inch iPhone 6s model and not the iPhone 6s Plus. It has set up a new assembly for the production of iPhone 6s Plus. The iPhone 6S Plus will be similarly protected, so here's hoping the brand adjusts the figure accordingly.

Local assembly of iPhone SE since May previous year helped the model to be insulated from a 6-7% price hike that Apple had to undertake as the basic custom duty on smartphones was increased to 15% from 10% in December and again to 20% in February.

It's only when the local manufacturing plan "gains scale" will the buyers see a price correction. In India, the iPhone SE can be bought for as low as Rs 18,799, while the iPhone 6S Plus can be found at Rs 37,999 on ecommerce platforms like Amazon India. The price could drop further if Apple sources phone components and packaging within the country, an effort that's already underway.

Motorola Moto G6 Play leaked in real life pictures
A recent online listing pegs the G6 at $250 (approx Rs 16,300), while the G6 Play may be priced at $200 (approx Rs 13,000). There's also what looks like a fingerprint sensor below the camera module with the Moto logo inscribed inside.

Another way for Apple to cut additional costs would be to make parts and packaging all within India as well.

The Indian government has imposed a 10% customs duty earlier this month on components like printed circuit boards populated with memory and chips, camera modules and connectors. The iPhone 6S, on-the-other-hand, accounts for nearly one-third of total sales of iPhones in India previous year.

Before you get excited though, it should be kept in mind that this change might not happen immediately since Wistron is just getting started, meaning Chinese imports will continue for the moment.
