The Foreign Secretary drew battle lines with the Kremlin as he pointed the finger directly at Vladimir Putin for the Salisbury poisoning, saying it is "overwhelmingly likely" he ordered the nerve agent attack on Sergei Skripal.

Mrs May said on Monday the Government had concluded it is "highly likely" Russian Federation was responsible for the attack which left Mr Skripal, 66, and his 33-year-old daughter in a critical condition in hospital. They and a police officer are hospitalized after being exposed to what officials say is a Soviet-developed nerve agent.

"We call on the Russian Federation to respond swiftly to the British government's legitimate questions and to co-operate with the OPCW", said Kostov, who made the comments on behalf of the EU.

Russian Federation has repeatedly dismissed the UK's accusations as "unfounded" and warned it would retaliate soon over the expulsion of its diplomats.

The US move to impose new unilateral sanctions on Russian Federation served further to underline how the Salisbury attack has become a lynchpin, off which the West is pushing Russian Federation harder over its worldwide activities.

The nations highlighted that the Salisbury attack was the first offensive use of a nerve agent in Europe since the Second World War, adding that it was "an assault on United Kingdom sovereignty", a clear violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention and a breach of worldwide law. In remarks Thursday in Moscow, Lavrov called May's actions "boorish" and said it was meant to distract from Britain's hard negotiations in leaving the European Union. She has denied collusion with the Kremlin and said she was ready to co-operate with Mr Putin's main foe, opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who was barred from the race because of a criminal conviction widely seen as politically motivated. "It's often described as a cool war that we are entering - I would say it is feeling exceptionally chilly at the moment". Although Mr. Putin is certain to win, the Kremlin wants to ensure as large a turnout as possible, and the accusations against the Kremlin reinforce Mr. Putin's image as a stalwart defender of his country under attack from Western enemies.
