Inspirational London teacher wins $1m Global Teacher Prize

"Congratulations to Andria Zafirakou for having won the Global Teacher award", tweeted Sheikh Mohammed after handing her the prize.

A teacher at a school from one of the country's most deprived areas has won a million dollars in the annual Global Teacher Prize.

Andria Zafirakou, an arts and textiles teacher from Alperton community school in Brent, north-west London, was presented with the fourth annual Varkey Foundation Global Teacher prize in Dubai on Sunday.

Her hard work paid and placed Alperton Community College "in the top five percent in England and Wales for improving pupils' achievement".

She redesigned the school's curriculum "to resonate with an ethnically diverse student body" and learnt the basics of some of the 35 languages spoken at the school to communicate with parents and students.

She added: "What is fantastic is whatever issues they are having at home, whatever is missing from their life or causing them pain, our school is theirs".

"I know if our school could open at six o'clock in the morning, there would be a queue of children waiting outside at five o'clock in the morning".

She was named as the victor at the end of the Global Education and Skills Conference in Dubai, where she was presented with her prize by Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton and host of The Daily Show, Trevor Noah.
