Within the latter half of this season alone, This Is Us gave us a heartbreaking miscarriage; an almost devastating vehicle accident that resulted in a DUI; a fire that nearly killed Jack Pearson, then didn't, but sort of did because he died of a heart attack afterward, all on Super Bowl Sunday; an eviction; and a wedding day that should have been focused on celebrating Toby and Kate but instead was dominated by the heavy grief and guilt Kate has been carrying for two decades with regard to her father's death. Metz feels that Toby has accomplished that shift for Kate. This person has always been there for her.
I wanted to do something special for having something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. If I'm playing the "what if" game that Randall plays where he envisions the worst-case scenarios, then Deja walking a dark path that leads her behind bars would be just that.
Formerly Paralyzed Music Student Auditions for 'American Idol'
That's the concern that I have about those who are auditioning . It was so good, it brought Katy Perry to the floor, literally. However, Garrett received a golden ticket.
That being said, Sullivan still has high hopes for Toby and Kate's future - as parents.
Like most parents, we all are doing the best we can, and while it seems pretty harsh and sort of out of the blue, I believe that Toby's parents have his best interests at heart - however, they have their own issues, as we all do.

"Being in touch with those feelings and figuring out why the show is tapping into whatever it's tapping into for you as an audience member, is an interesting thing to explore", he told Us. Did you catch them all? "Yeah. You're going to see how Deja responds to all of this and what we're in for here". You'll probably cry once, more than likely twice. Kate's friendship with Madison (Caitlin Thompson) was a highlight. They're an unlikely pair, but have more in common than anybody would think, which is, of course, the layers of the friendship. Cousin Zoe tries to ease Deja's anger; like her, she was a teen angry at the world, no thanks to a mother who dumped her at her aunt's house when she was a child. While "The Wedding" doesn't put an end to their grieving (it's hardly so simple) it does guide them into a new phase of mourning, one where each family member has a chance to let go and take a breath. "And I've got to make room for Toby, so I've got to let go a little now". Working with everybody was really, really fun, and also just the idea of a wedding was fun to be a part of.
The This Is Us cast previously hinted that Milo Ventimiglia would appear looking as if he hadn't died.

There were areas where season two was able to continue what was so strong in season one, and in some cases improve upon it. Episodes were a lot more structurally fluid this year, bouncing from timeline to timeline - never more potently than in last week's thoroughly unstuck-in-time Deja spotlight - rather than sticking with season one's fairly rigid format of a Jack and Rebecca '80s or '90s story thematically paralleling what the Big Three were going through as adults. There are so many facets to everybody, whether they're fictional or not, but I love that they're exploring more of her music and coming through all of that together. William's return to Randall's life provided enough of one to carry much of the first season, and it eventually reached out to affect Rebecca and Kevin and even Kate and Toby to a degree, so it wasn't just confined to Randall and Beth's corner of the series. While that was the signature event in these characters' lives, Tuesday's episode served notice that life goes on.
