REPORT: Spike Lee, Cheo Hodari Coker Developing Marvel's Nightwatch for Sony

Spike Lee & Luke Cage Creator Reportedly Developing Nightwatch Movie

While previous report said Edward Ricourt ("Now You See Me") was developing a script for the film, a source says Lee will work off a script provided by "Luke Cage" showrunner Cheo Hodari Choker.

First birthed in Marvel comics back in 1993, Nightwatch follows Dr. Kevin Trench, whose life was saved by a future version of himself wearing the high tech suit that gives the hero his name. More on the Nightwatch movie below. The "Oldboy" director had been eyed to sit behind the lens since the story ran past year and now The Hashtag Show says that he's on board the spin-off.

In addition to a 2019 Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel, the studio also has the Tom Hardy vehicle Venom due out October 5, and Silver & Black, from director Gina Prince-Bythewood, set for February 8 2019.

It's been months since reports emerged that Sony Pictures is developing another Spider-Man spin-off focusing on Nightwatch.

Word on the street has long pegged director Spike Lee for one of Sony's forthcoming superhero joints, and today it's finally been confirmed what that movie is, how it fits in with the rest of Sony's superhero landscape, and who's lined up to write it. Spawn is also getting a film adaptation, due out in 2019. It is rumored that the director will be in charge of Nightwatch.

Lee, the director behind Do The Right Thing, Malcolm X, 25th Hour, Inside Man, and many more, is now filming the crime film Black Klansman, starring John David Washington, Adam Driver, Laura Harrier, and former Spider-Man franchise cast member Topher Grace.

Superhero films are the norm now, and while I have a tendency to feel a bit burned-out on them, the prospect of Spike Lee using his considerable talents within the genre is too good to pass up.
