A special court has discharged the Maran brothers in the BSNL telephone exchange scam.

Maran brothers and others were acquitted by a special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in Chennai on Wednesday.

Alleging a loss of Rs. 1.78 crore to the exchequer, the CBI had invoked provisions under the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Corruption Act. It filed the chargesheet late a year ago under IPC sections related to criminal conspiracy and forgery and under Prevention of Corruption Act.

Other accused who have been discharged are former BSNL general manager K Brahmanathan, former BSNL deputy general manager M P Velusamy, Dayanidhi Maran's private secretary V Gauthaman, and K S Ravi and S Kannan of Sun TV.

The court said that everybody has been discharged as no case was made out.

In November, the CBI strongly opposed the discharge petitions filed by the brothers in the case.

On the discharge pleas filed by the brothers, their counsel Kabil Sibal last month had contended that the case was foisted on them.

The CBI said it will move the High Court against the order, PTI reported. The Maran brothers and other employees of Sun Group have criminally conspired to commit the offences, thereby causing financial loss to the government.
