Suspect in killing of Ky. police officer still on the loose

A Pikeville, Kentucky police officer shot and killed in the line of duty was reportedly ambushed. Kentucky State Police are investigating but said they have no suspects. After speaking with the occupants of the vehicle, the officers separated to canvas the area around a nearby residence for possible subjects on foot.

Gunshots were then fired within close proximity to the residence, said police. Trooper Martin located Officer Hamilton who had sustained a fatal gunshot wound.

Hamilton was pronounced dead at the scene by the Pike County Coroner's Office.

Kentucky State Police initially reported one person was in custody.

The body of Pikeville police officer Scotty Hamilton was returned to the town Wednesday afternoon after he was shot and killed responding to a call late Tuesday night.

"Wherever I've seen Officer Hamilton, whoever he was with, whatever he was doing, he always took the time to shake my hand and ask me how I was doing", said James Maynard, who worked with Hamilton at the City of Pikeville 911 Public Safety Center.

KSP will be conducting a murder investigation.
