"Tropical Cyclone Linda is expected to continue to move southwest towards the Queensland coast for the next 24 hours, before turning south and ultimately southeast away from the coast again", the Bureau of Meteorology said this afternoon.

It's not expected to make landfall, but residents are being warned to brace for tidal flooding, wild winds and unsafe surf.

"There still will be showers especially around our coastal regions over the next couple of days, but because this system is anticipated to remain offshore, that's why the heavier rain will remain off the coast as well".

Surfers and boaties are being urged to postpone any planned activities on the water until the weather improves, with 3 to 4 metre waves expected.

The cyclone should weaken back into a tropical low by Thursday morning before it tracks southeast out to sea. A severe weather warning iscurrent for these conditions.

It comes after weeks of heavy rainfall battered Queensland, leaving parts of the far north washed out and towns completely under water.
