Slovakian Interior Minister Robert Kalinak announced on Monday would resign from his post amid the crisis following the slayings of an investigative journalist and his fiancee.

Should Most-Hid, a centrist group that represents the ethnic Hungarian minority in Slovakia, pull out of the ruling coalition, Fico will be forced to rule as part of a minority government that would need to rely on the backing of far-right lawmakers - something Fico's Smer party opposes.

"We believe that only early elections would solve this situation", Bugar said after a meeting of his party's leadership that took nearly eight hours. They were the biggest protests in Slovakia since the 1989 anti-communist Velvet Revolution.

The seventh round of Nafta talks ended Monday with some progress on minor issues, and a US willingness to "compromise". However, Trump more directly tied Canada and Mexico's exclusion from the tariffs to a successful NAFTA outcome.

Fico's three-party coalition, which also includes the centrist Slovak National Party (SNS), has 78 of 150 seats in parliament.

Robert Kalinak, who was also deputy prime minister, said this morning that he was stepping down to preserve stability in the central European nation. Kalinak's resignation was a key requirement of Most-Hid for it remaining in the coalition.

"My decision to resign is tied to our efforts to stabilize the situation", Kalinak said. Kalinak is a founding member of Fico's Smer party.

Thousands already demanded Kalinak's resignation a year ago after he was linked to earlier corruption scandals.

Kiska has called for a "radical" overhaul of the government or early elections to restore trust in state institutions, which he said had been shaken after killing of Jan Kuciak, a journalist reporting on crime with alleged ties to politicians.
