Slovakian Interior Minister Robert Kalinak announced on Monday would resign from his post amid the crisis following the slayings of an investigative journalist and his fiancee.
Should Most-Hid, a centrist group that represents the ethnic Hungarian minority in Slovakia, pull out of the ruling coalition, Fico will be forced to rule as part of a minority government that would need to rely on the backing of far-right lawmakers - something Fico's Smer party opposes.
"We believe that only early elections would solve this situation", Bugar said after a meeting of his party's leadership that took nearly eight hours. They were the biggest protests in Slovakia since the 1989 anti-communist Velvet Revolution.

"My decision to resign is tied to our efforts to stabilize the situation", Kalinak said. Kalinak is a founding member of Fico's Smer party.
