Veteran communist leader Manik Sarkar has always set new examples for our political class, infamous for indulging in lavish lifestyle at the cost of taxpayers' money.

Although ideologically opposed to him, Bharatiya Janata Party leader Ram Madhav on Thursday praised the frugality of former Tripura chief minister Manik Sarkar - also a CPI-M politburo member - that he said was something for other leaders to emulate.

His new home is one room in a guest house around half a km from the bungalow on Marx-Engels Sarani, where he lived till yesterday.

Manik Sarkar, who has been in the chair for 20 years, is the poorest chief minister in the country, donates his salary to his party and doesn't use an official vehicle for campaigning.

The couple are blessed with no children. Sarkar and his wife will eat food from the canteen housed inside the CPI-M state committee office.

On March 6, Deb was named as the Chief Minister of Tripura after BJP's registered resounding victory in the CPI-M ruled state ousting the Manik Sarkar government. "Mr Sarkar might shift to a government quarter if he is allocated one by the new government", Mr Das said.

Former Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar is likely to become the leader of the opposition in the newly constituted Tripura Assembly after the legislative elections won by the BJP-IPFT combine. The previous ruling party, CPI-M, managed to get just 16 seats.
