United States of America wins first ever Olympic medal in women's cross country -- Gold!

US Wins First Cross-Country Gold Ever

US skiers Jessie Diggins, Kikkan Randall stun field for historic cross-country gold

"It was this team event, this race in particular, that really motivated me to go for one more Olympics", she told TODAY once the euphoria had died down, if only a little.

The Americans won their semifinal heat to reach the final.

The town of 3,000 is already planning a celebration which could include an official "Jessie Diggins Day" as well as a parade like when she received the skis to the city a couple of years ago.

And the scoop at Selma's Ice Cream Parlour is that Diggins will get her own flavor when it reopens for the season next month.

"Every year she comes and spends one or two workouts with us which we really appreciate", said Siri Bohacek, Hansen's daughter and current member of the Stillwater team.

She stood next to Sweden's Charlotte Kalla in the finish area at the Alpensia Ski Center in Pyeongchang, South Korea, as their teammates - Jessie Diggins for the United States, Stina Nilsson for Sweden - fought ferociously through the final few meters.

"I was thinking, 'Go, go, go, '" Diggins said. Voting took place among all competing Olympians from February 1-21 in the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Villages.

After winning World Cup sprint titles in 2012, 2013 and 2014, Randall was tipped for individual success in Russian Federation only for a back injury to compromise her performance.

The U.S. starters have not been announced, but Diggins likely will race in the two-person team sprint. She and Randall also were the first US skiers to win a World Cup team event when they took the gold medal at a freestyle team sprint in 2013. And the victory is also decades in the making.

"That feeling of being able to cross the line and have Kikkan tackle me was the coolest thing ever", Diggins said.

The crowd in the grandstand was on its feet, sensing history, and at that moment Diggins said she felt "unstoppable". "I know he's in a good place so now I can focus on what I need to do". Without any teammates, she was forced to travel with the USA men's team.

In addition to her athletic accomplishments, Randall has served as an active ambassador for youth through leadership engagement with both Healthy Futures and Fast and Female - organizations that promote the benefits of healthy, active lifestyles to youth.

It remains possible that her replacement will be chosen at the Session but the third-placed athlete will not necessarily be the competitor who is selected.

Kikkan Randall, left, and Jessica Diggins chest-bump on the podium.

Terho earned the most votes among the six candidates at 1,045, while Randall collected 831 votes from her peers.

It's at this point that the excitement builds as a medal for the USA is in their grasp.

They do this three times, each completing three laps.

"... I couldn't imagine a better way to finish my career (than) to win a medal in a team event".
