For the second day in a row, U.S. President Donald Trump spoke at length about school safety, advocating arming teachers with guns to thwart campus massacres. The most recent one in Parkland, Florida when 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz killed 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on the afternoon of February 14.

Teenagers walked out of their classrooms across the country to take part in gun control protests outside the White House and in Florida, Chicago, Pittsburgh, and Phoenix, Arizona.

Many teachers, including some at Stoneman Douglas High School, have spoken out against that idea.

I want to feel safe at school, you know, senior year and junior year, they were big years for me, when I turned my turned my academics around, started connecting with teachers, and I started actually enjoying school.

A staff member with a gun could end an attack "very quickly", he said.

"I never said "give teachers guns" like was stated on Fake News CNN and NBC".

"A gun-free zone, to a maniac, because they are all cowards, a gun-free zone is, 'let's go in and let's attack'".

Shifting from teachers being able to respond "immediately" to "instantly", he insisted that any future actions to prevent mass shootings "must be offensive", because "defense alone won't work", which, it should be pointed out, is a slightly unhinged observation to make (whether pro or anti-gun control) considering the objective would be to protect and defend.

Trump reiterated on Thursday that he would also be "strongly pushing" comprehensive background checks of gun buyers and ending the sale of bump stocks, which increase the firepower of some weapons.

The people assembled for the White House meeting on Wednesday included parents of students killed in massacres at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, and Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut.

Andrew Pollack, a father of one of the 17 victims who died in the Florida shooting, said he was speaking because his daughter couldn't. And Mr. President, we'll fix it. "We don't want to be, and would never have the expertise needed to be, sharp shooters; no amount of training can prepare an armed teacher to go up against an AR-15". "Me and my friends, we get scared when a vehicle drives by, anywhere", said Sam Zeif, a student from Marjory Stoneman Douglas in Parkland. "She was murdered last week".

The US Congress has always been deadlocked on the gun debate, accomplishing nothing despite a spate of mass shootings and polls showing that Americans support stricter gun laws by a two-to-one margin.
