Elsewhere on the podium, Joerg captured her first Olympic medal after falling one place shy in the Vancouver 2010 Games and finishing 13th four years ago in Sochi, Russia.

In the small final, 21-year-old Olympic debutant Ramona Hofmeister (GER) secured the bronze, cruising over the line after Alena Zavarzina (OAR) wiped out half-way down the run.

"It was a big burden over the last week", she said.

The reigning world champion in the parallel giant slalom had already created one of the biggest stories in the history of Alpine skiing days earlier at PyeongChang 2018, winning the super G event.

The Nad Ali attack was followed by a second suicide auto bombing in the provincial capital Lashkar Gah that wounded seven people. Qari Yusouf Ahmadi, a Taliban spokesman, claimed responsibility for both suicide attacks in Helmand.

"Do whatever you want", she said.

Toutant had finished last in the slopestyle final but he scored 174.25 points from his best two jumps, with American Kyle Mack finishing on 168.75 points to take silver and Britain's Billy Morgan in bronze.

There were a few nervy moments for Ledecka in the final, but the world champion overcame those wobbles to finish 0.46 seconds ahead of her rival and complete history in South Korea. It was Ledecka's first-ever victory on skis.

That was the only Alpine skiing event that Ledecka participated in at these Olympics.

The "Olympic Athletes from Russia" did not qualify for the final part of the competitions. Chris Corning and Red Gerard, the gold medalist in slopestyle, finished fourth and fifth.

"The millennials are raw and inclusive, and trying other sports is important to them, as it should be", Vonn said. "I'm still confused but terribly happy at the same time", she added. "I think she definitely will have a long-lasting impact". She spoke of the jaw-dropping lines that Ledecka carves on Alpine courses - a knack that Ledecka's snowboarding coach, Justin Reiter, attributes to her experience maneuvering on a snowboard, which, because it has no steadying or stabilizing poles, requires seeing a mountain in a more imaginative way. "I'm in my skin and doing what I love".

Jessie Diggins has one more big Olympic moment awaiting her. Diggins - who thrust herself across the finish line to give the Americans a dazzling gold medal in the cross-country team sprint - has been selected as the US flagbearer for Sunday night's closing ceremony at the Pyeongchang Games.

Like thousands of children around the world, the young Ledecka was advised at an early age to concentrate on one sport but one thing the two Esters have in common is a single-minded determination to follow their heart. Shiffrin added with a laugh, "I thought this sport was hard, but apparently not". I was just standing there and suddenly the snowboard girl comes in.

In the win over the Scarlet Knights, Bates-Diop registered only six points on 3-11 shooting, including 0-4 from behind the arc. The Hoosiers would need heroic performances from both Morgan and Johnson if they wish to pull off the upset in this one.
