Supreme Court of Pakistan has issued arrest warrants for former Pakistani ambassador to United States-Hussain Haqqani-in Memogate scandal case today.

This development came as a three-judge bench headed by CJP Mian Saqib Nisar heard the petitions for granting right of vote to overseas Pakistanis in the upcoming general elections 2018.

He also informed the court that the FIA needs an arrest warrant issued by the court to proceed against Haqqani.

Earlier, Haqqani had dismissed reports of the infamous Memogate case being reopened as a "political gimmick" on part of the apex court. "I have not been charged with any crime and have not been put on trial".

The chief justice said that Hussain Haqqani had assured the apex court of his return but had backtracked from his promise.

Lebanon Urges US to Prevent Israel From 'Continuing Assaults on Sovereignty'

He said that such measures will not interrupt his life.

The case is about a memorandum that Haqqani had allegedly written to former United States Admiral Mike Mullen in 2011 in the wake of the killing of Osama bin Laden.

On February 1, the SC had constituted a three-member bench to resume hearings of the controversial Memogate case involving the former ambassador to the US.

In this regard, a court notice has already been issued to Hussain Haqqani and other respondents of the case - including former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

The Memogate scandal erupted in 2011 when Pakistani-American businessman Mansoor Ijaz claimed to have received an "anti-army" memo from Haqqani, the then-Pakistan envoy in Washington DC, for USA joint chiefs chairman Admiral Mike Mullen.

UK, Irish leaders seek to break Northern Ireland stalemate
In a statement yesterday, the DUP leader said that the restoration of power sharing at Stormont is "not possible at this time". The British government faces the prospect of having to step in and take previously devolved decisions in Northern Ireland.

At the last hearing on February 8, the top court summoned the secretaries of the interior and foreign affairs and the director general of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to discuss possible steps for bringing Husain Haqqani back to Pakistan.

In December 2017, three people had separately lodged FIRs against him for delivering hate speeches and writing books and articles against the Pakistan armed forces.

The memo sent by Haqqani in 2011 allegedly mentioned a possible army coup in Pakistan following the U.S. raid in Abbottabad to kill Osama bin Laden.

Haqqani denied any role in the "memo" but a judicial commission in 2012 held him responsible.
