Sources close to Thiel told the Journal that the eccentric billionaire is also considering resigning from the board of Facebook. Thiel is examining the idea of setting up a conservative media outlet in Los Angeles. "Silicon Valley is a one-party state", Mr. Thiel said last month at a debate on technology and politics at Stanford University.

"We need to engage more" rather than "telling Trump voters to just hurry up and die", Thiel said at the event.

Peter Thiel, Silicon Valley's most high-profile conservative, may be admitting defeat in Silicon Valley's culture wars and retreating to Los Angeles.

Silicon Valley companies and tech workers overwhelmingly supported Democrat Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election.

Thiel cofounded PayPal, which was sold to eBay for $1.5 billion in 2002.

Thiel has left the boards of Zenefits and Asana, sold the majority of his stake in Twilio, and parted ways with startup incubator Y Combinator in the last two years.
