Standing Instead Of Sitting All Day Could Help You Lose Weight

The researchers found that standing burned 0.15 calories per minute more than sitting.

The global study of more than 1000 men and women found that standing instead of sitting for six hours a day burned an extra 54 calories daily - resulting in significant weight loss. They were, on average, 33 years old with an average body mass index and weight of 24 (normal range) and 140 pounds.

To find out, Lopez-Jimenez' team looked at data from 46 studies involving a total of almost 1,200 people.

Dr. Francisco Lopez-Jimenez, the senior author and chair of preventive cardiology at Mayo Clinic, said that sedentary behavior, such as sitting, has contributed to the rising rates of obesity, heart disease, and diabetes seen across the western world.

Researchers from the Mayo Clinic pointed out people in Europe now spend between 3.2 hours and 6.8 hours per day sitting, while American adults spend more than seven hours per day sitting on average.

"Overall, our study shows that, when you put all the available scientific evidence together, standing accounts for more calories burned than sitting".

That might not seem like much, but it adds up over time.

Over the course of a year, researchers say that by standing instead of sitting, people could lose 2.5kg (5.5lbs) without changing their eating habits - a figure that amounts to more than a stone and half in four years.

Previous studies have described how different muscles are involved in sitting, and while standing, the muscles are tensed and stretched to fight gravity and bear weight.

The effects were more pronounced in men than women.

"We spend 10 hours of our lives every day at work, way more than we spend at home, so I think it makes sense to make our office one of our main settings for physical activity", said Lopez-Jimenez.

But they stressed that whether the additional expended energy would translate into long-term weight loss was yet to be proved, as standing for prolonged periods may lead to an increase in calorie intake as a result of more muscle activity. People may even be more likely to walk to the filing cabinet or trash bin.
