No city in the Portland region made the top 20 list for Amazon's new headquarters that was released Thursday. The rest of the chosen Canadian and United States competitors (Mexican bids didn't make the cut) included what the Times considered "shoo-ins", including Dallas and Raleigh, NC, but also some surprises, such as Miami, Indianapolis, and Columbus, Ohio.

Amazon received 239 proposals from cities across the US, including Birmingham and Huntsville.

Amazon evaluated each of the proposals based on the criteria outlined in the RFP to create the list of 20 HQ2 candidates that will continue in the selection process. Amazon expects to make a decision in 2018.

The finalist cities are: Atlanta; Austin, Texas; Boston; Chicago; Columbus, Ohio; Dallas; Denver; Indianapolis; Los Angeles; Miami; Montgomery County, Maryland; Nashville, Tennessee; Newark, New Jersey; New York; Northern Virginia; Philadelphia; Pittsburgh; Raleigh, North Carolina; Toronto; and Washington D.C. In addition to Amazon's direct hiring and investment, construction and operation of HQ2 is expected to create tens of thousands of additional jobs and tens of billions of dollars in additional investment in the surrounding community.
