Jonathan Agnew, the BBC cricket correspondent and former England pace bowler, feels that a poor one-day series and defeat in the forthcoming two-Test tour to New Zealand would end "a really bad winter for English cricket".

BBC Sport looks at why England can be considered favourites to win the series less than two years on from their miserable World Cup showing.

"Everyone does everything they can to play for Australia or England".

"Ben is a fantastic player", said Morgan. Smith and Finch have been very good against this England bowling.

"The one-day side is very settled, with experienced individuals playing the way they want to play".

He even has the luxury of a left-armer, David Willey, among the reserves and is enthused about the make-up of his attack.

Mets in serious talks with Adrian Gonzalez
He played for the Texas Rangers, San Diego Padres and the Boston Red Sox before joining the Dodgers in midseason in 2012. Adrian Gonzalez has agreed to a deal with the New York Mets pending a physical, according to ESPN and multiple reports.

WHEN England appointed Trevor Bayliss it was to achieve success in white-ball cricket as much as anything else.

England's attack isn't as formidable but contains considerably more variety than their popgun Test arsenal led by quicks Mark Wood, Liam Plunkett and brilliant spinner Adil Rashid - the leading ODI wicket-taker of the past three years.

Joe Root has been declared fit for the selection so undoubtedly he will occupy the number three spot followed by the skipper Eoin Morgan.

They have a better record than any other team since the last World Cup winning 34 of 53 matches.

He said: "I know they had a hard run with weather in the Champions Trophy, they didn't even complete a full game against us, and certainly that was a struggle for them".

But just days after sickness cruelly knocked him out of the last Test in Sydney, England's skipper delivered a defiant message to his tormentors.

Djokovic dominates on his return from injury
With a good draw and some strong performances in the early rounds, Thiem could go on a strong run in Melbourne this year. I'm happy with how I'm performing now.

England: England included Jonny Bairstow in their squad, which means Alex Hales might bat at No.3. Or can they cope up with the absence of Stokes in Australia? England have been a successful team in the limited-overs format and have won matches with their aggressive approach.

Hales is free to play again after being cleared over his involvement in the Stokes incident. The all-rounder claimed 2-28 from 10 overs in the warm-up victory over a Cricket Australia XI this week. Aaron Finch ensured that the pressure goes back on England after all those early wickets.

Morgan has been delighted by the progress England have made under Bayliss since the 2015 World Cup saying they have improved a lot faster than anyone thought they would.

As England tomorrow embark on the first of five one-day internationals against Australia, looking not only to get that Ashes result out of their system but also to continue preparations for next year's World Cup, Bayliss is in a odd position.

Bayliss has said since the Ashes that he will stand down when his contract expires in September 2019.
