Centenarian: 2019 Chevrolet Silverado Debuts as Chevy Trucks Marks 100 Years

Chevy kicks off North American International Auto Show 2018 with Silverado reveal in Detroit

General Motors reveals its 2019 Chevrolet Silverado pick-up truck at Eastern Market before the start of Press Days of the North American International Auto Show in Detroit January 14, 2018.

The Silverado is the second-best selling vehicle in the US and is outsold only by Ford's F-Series pickups. But we know enough to know these trucks will provide some stiff competition for Ford and Ram, and it's definitely time to stage our own battle of the light-duty diesels.

Chevy already gave us a quick look at the all-new 2019 Chevy Silverado 1500 at its 100 year celebration last month in Texas, but now we have all the official details about the all-new Silverado.

2 bodies recovered from burning oil tanker in China
The stricken tanker, Sanchi , had drifted into Japan's exclusive economic zone and "suddenly ignited", reports said . All 32 sailors on board an oil tanker that sank after burning for a week have been confirmed dead .

The new Silverado has a longer wheel base and more passenger and cargo space than the current model, yet is 450 pounds lighter. The new Silverado, which goes on sale this fall, slims down by using GM's expertise in melding different metals. The latter material is used on doors, hood and tailgate and this helps to truck's body to weigh 88 pounds (40 kg) less than before. Aluminum parts in the suspension and other areas make up the rest of the weight loss. The 2019 model is available in 8 different trim levels, with the goal of pleasing the broad range of consumers that buy half-ton pickup trucks. But what engines will the new Silverado use and what other models will be offered? In fact, Chevy says the interior will be the roomiest of all full-size trucks. The combination of lower weight and a refinement in aerodynamics adds up to a better performing truck on the road, according to Mark Reuss EVP of global product development at Chevrolet, but should also improve on economy, too.

The truck bed is nearly 7 inches wider than the previous model and the short box is 63 cubic feet.

The Silverado will stick with V-8s as its top-line engines, announcing that its 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter workhorses become more efficient with "dynamic fuel-management" - the engine's electronic brain chooses between one and eight cylinders, depending on need. Where Ford's 700-pound aluminum diet brought it even with the current-generation Chevy pickup, the 2019 Silverado should once again claim class-lightweight status with 450 pounds of weight reduction. The 2019 Silverado will be available with a power up/down tailgate that can be operated from the key fob, interior button or by hand. Each engine is paired to GM's new 10-speed automatic transmission. Cutouts in the bumper that let drivers step into the bed are larger to accommodate steel-toe boots.
