The adoptive father of a Richardson toddler found dead in a culvert last October has been indicted on charges of capital murder and tampering with physical evidence.
Authorities say Mathews initially told investigators that Sherin disappeared before dawn on October 7, 2017, after he made her stand outside as punishment for not drinking her milk.
Mathews told police that Sherin stifled and hacked and in the long run he felt she had no heartbeat and trusted the youngster had dead. Then he changed his story to say the girl choked to death while drinking her milk in the garage. The doctor also said she didn't believe Sini Mathews' assertion that Sherin broke her elbow when her older sister pushed her off the couch.
Mathews' wife, Sini, was indicted for abandoning the child, which could get up to 20 years of jail time.

He described a special diet regimen in which she had to eat whenever she was awake in order to gain weight. He had said that he "physically assisted (her).in drinking the milk".
Attorney David Kleckner said in November at a hearing about custody of the couple's biological child that Wesley Mathews is "a good father, a loving man and loves his family".

Mathews also reportedly told investigators that he "knew coyotes had been seen in the alley where he left his daughter".
Sini Mathews has maintained her innocence, KTVT has reported. Her attorney has previously said she played no role in Sherin's death.
Mathews admitted to police he removed the body from the home after she died, continued the affidavit. The local police chief said it's been an intense case for his officers.
"We're pleased we've reached this stage in the investigation...hopefully we've taken the next step to bringing justice for Sherin Mathews", Spivey said.
