Snow in Florida: Tallahassee sees first significant snow since 1989

In Tallahassee, Interstate 10 was temporarily closed as fear swelled around how much snow would be expected.

In Central Florida, the state's largest theme parks announced that water attractions such as Disney's Typhoon Lagoon, Universal Orlando's Volcano Bay and SeaWorld's Aquatica were closed Wednesday because of the cold snap.

Bloomberg reports that parts of Florida, including its capital of Tallahassee, already experienced snowfall earlier on Wednesday.

Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport received 1.2 inches of snow, making it the seventh-heaviest one-day snowfall on record there.

The last measurable snowfall in Tallahassee happened in 1989.

The National Weather Service predicted snow flurries across a swath of northern Florida, from Tallahassee to Jacksonville, on Wednesday morning. Charleston, S.C. saw at least five inches of snow by Thursday morning.

Wilmington, North Carolina, saw 3.8 inches of snow which is the highest total there since January 10, 2011 when 3.8 inches was also observed.

Forecasters predict one to four inches of snow are in Georgia, while parts of eastern North Carolina and southeast Virginia may see locally higher amounts that top 6 inches.
