The Texas lawsuits involve more traditional challenges to the use of race in drawing district lines, something the high court deals with perennially from states with a history of violating the 1968 Voting Rights Act.

"I am very pleased that the United States Supreme Court has agreed to hear this case".

In ruling against the maps past year, a three-judge panel in San Antonio sided with the voting and minority rights groups who accused Republican lawmakers of discriminating against voters of color, who tend to vote for Democrats, in drawing the maps. By contrast, the Wisconsin and Maryland cases allege excessive political gerrymandering - designing districts to benefit one party over the other. Texas voters will choose candidates in the March 6 primaries according to the current districts, but the Supreme Court's ruling is not expected until summer, when primary winners will be campaigning in advance of the November general elections.

A federal district court ruled previous year that those districts discriminated against Democratic voters "by impeding their ability to translate their votes into legislative seats".

Zidane: 'I'm exhausted of hearing everything is bad at Real Madrid...'
Karim Benzema, Sergio Ramos and Luca Zidane remain in the treatment room, but there are no other worries for Zinedine Zidane . That comes from winning games. "We're going to think that, with work, we will achieve good things".

Republican Blake Faren- thold of Corpus Christi is not seeking re-election after ss charges. Also on Friday, Chief Justice John Roberts ordered groups that challenged congressional districts in North Carolina - which were struck down earlier this week for giving Republicans an improper advantage over Democrats - to respond by Wednesday to an appeal by state officials.

None of the affected House districts are in Bexar County, but several are in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Doggett's district was essentially overloading it with Democrat-leaning minority voters, the judges said.

A total of 36 states and the District of Columbia had asked the high court take up the issue.

They are a balanced pair: who dominate the state legislature, while. They're largely based on temporary maps drawn by the three-judge panel in San Antonio amid legal wrangling over the maps lawmakers drew in 2011. But the panel ruled that the intentional discrimination behind the 2011 maps carried over into the 2013 maps in places where district boundaries were unchanged.

The EIA revised its production growth forecast for 2018 sharply higher to 970,000 bpd from 780,000 bpd in its previous outlook. The EIA anticipates OPEC production to increase by 500,000 b/d in 2019 as it slowly returns to pre-agreement levels.

The lower court had ordered the districts redrawn in time for the 2018 elections, but the Supreme Court blocked those orders previous year. "The lower court's decisions to invalidate parts of the maps it drew and adopted is inexplicable and indefensible". The state government then filed suit to have the case heard by the higher courts, in an effort to get the measure deemed constitutional by way of overturning Quill v. A ruling in that case is pending.

Hanging over the Texas case is the possibility that the state will be placed back under federal oversight of its elections laws.

But Congress has struggled for years to come up with a plan, even though some online retailers have said that they would welcome a national remedy rather than deal with individual states. "Issues include violations of the Voting Rights Act, findings of unconstitutional racial gerrymandering, and a finding that Texas acted with racially discriminatory intent".
