Well, the rumors were true: according to Deadline, Leonardo DiCaprio has signed on to star in Quentin Tarantino's as-yet-untitled ninth film, a period piece set against the backdrop of the Manson Family murders in the late '60s.

All of Tarantino's past work has been distributed by The Weinstein Company and, well...nobody wants that guy's name stuck on the front of their movie these days, so Quentin has shopped the film around Hollywood.

DiCaprio's will play an aging actor in the story that is being kept under wraps but is a Pulp Fiction-esque movie set in the 1969 Los Angeles during the summer of the Manson murders. So at the very least, the movie will feature some of the murder victims, if not the actual murders. Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt and Al Pacino are also rumored to be interested, or are being sought, for the movie. However, confirmation that Leonardo DiCaprio has taken a lead role in his next film is just cream on the strudel. The role was eventually filled by Christoph Waltz, which won him an Oscar. Margot Robbie, meanwhile, is being eyed for the role of Sharon Tate.

DiCaprio hasn't been seen on the big screen since his Oscar-winning turn in The Revenant, but has lined up numerous high-profile projects, including a reunion with longtime collaborator Martin Scorsese for a Teddy Roosevelt biopic at Paramount. DiCaprio and Tarantino last worked together on "Django Unchained".
