Chinese President Xi Jinping and French President Emmanuel Macron have discussed on how to build an open world economy, improve global governance, and jointly cope with global challenges such as the DPRK nuclear issue, terrorism and climate change.

The French stance underscores a growing unease in parts of the EU at the one-sided nature of Chinese trade and the potential for China and other countries to pick off strategic European technologies.

A lack of competitiveness is the main reason for France's trade deficit with China.

"Macron seems to have come to the realization that he had better be on the right side of the table under China's divide and conquer strategy in Europe, i.e. a more accommodating stance towards China", she wrote.

He noted France was the first Western country to form diplomatic ties with the Communist Beijing government and recalled that then-President Charles de Gaulle and Chinese leader Mao Zedong met in 1964.

Despite the relatively small number of deals announced so far, officials were confident of success.

French officials quoted by the French news agency AFP as Macron wrapped up his three-day visit accompanied by a large French business delegation said the 184 planes would be delivered to 13 airlines in 2019 and 2020. As well as aerospace, the agrifood sector is seen as key.

Macron has put on the charm during the visit, giving Xi a Republican Guard horse as a gift and delighting Chinese social media users by releasing a video of him learning to say his climate slogan, "Make the planet great again", in Mandarin.

"It's important. It's symbolic", said Brigitte Macron, whose husband campaigned as a centrist candidate in the French presidential election.

He also said Beijing is for coordinating with France on major global issues in the hope of promoting world stability and prosperity.

"Our beef now has no access (to China) for sanitary reasons".
