Voice assistants made a big impact at CES past year, but next week they will be all but inescapable on the show floor.

CES, formerly known as the Consumer Electronics Show, begins Tuesday and lasts through Friday in Las Vegas.

Whereas the 2017 CES was underscored by a heavy focus on smart home automation, this year's edition of the event will likely place more attention to the emerging fields of virtual reality and artificial intelligence.

CES 2018: Get ready for yet more (yes more) smart devices

Amazon will have its own booth for Alexa at CES this year, and it's promising "exciting new products along with hundreds of vendors who have chosen to develop products based on Amazon voice technology". LG has added Google Assistant to its TVs, stereo speakers and other gadgets. Playing both sides, Panasonic also showed how it is bringing Google Assistant technology to cars as well.

"Coming out of CES, we're going to clearly have established that voice is going to be the go-to user interface", said Steve Koenig, senior director of market research for the Consumer Technology Association.

About a dozen self-driving vehicles from automakers like Ford, Mercedes-Benz and Nissan will be at this year's show. It can also be integrated with other smart devices in the home, such as smart hair dryers.

One of the most curious devices arriving at CES will be presented by Miliboo, a company that has been working on a smart sofa that collects information about television viewing habits and correlates them to the posture assumed by viewers during specific programming.
