A British defence source said a vehicle tried forcing its way past a checkpoint into the base.

"When the base gets placed on lockdown people have to stay in their offices; you turn off the lights; you lock the doors, you draw the curtains or blinds around the windows to make it look like no one is around".

The Royal Air Force (RAF) base is used by the US Air Force.

Local police said they were responding to "reports of a significant incident" at RAF Mildenhall, a British base 75 miles northeast of London where American personnel are stationed.

On 8 January 2015, the United States Department of Defense announced that operations at RAF Mildenhall would end (along with those at RAF Molesworth and RAF Alconbury), and be relocated to Germany (Spangdahlem Air Base) and also elsewhere within the UK.

A US Air Force spokeswoman confirmed the incident had been "contained" and that a suspect had been apprehended.
